About HEC: The Higher Education Commission (abbreviated as HEC) is a federal agency established by the Pakistani government in 2002 under the chairmanship of Atta-ur-Rahman. Its principal responsibilities include funding, monitoring, regulating, and accrediting the country's higher education institutions. It was founded in 1974 as the University Grants Commission (UGC), and after Atta-ur- Rahman’s reforms, which won international acclaim, it was renamed in 2002. The commission is in charge of developing higher education policy and ensuring that it meets international standards, as well as accrediting academic degrees, establishing new institutions, and improving existing ones in Pakistan. The commission also aided the growth of the country's higher educational system, with the primary goal of upgrading the country's universities and degree-awarding institutes to serve as a focal point for high-level learning, research, and development. It has played a significant and leading role in the development of a knowledge-based economy in Pakistan by annually awarding hundreds of Ph.D. scholarships for study abroad.
